Tarnishing is a natural occurrence with sterling silver. It occurs after exposure to everyday chemicals, air, skin, and oils, to name a few. Simply put, it is a chemical reaction that causes discolouration to outer layers of a metal.
The phenomenon, also known as oxidation, also occurs in copper, brass, and aluminium. As sterling silver is a common jewellery metal, most people will have experienced it.
There is no way to avoid tarnishing. We recommend you simply follow the below instructions to keep your silver jewellery looking as good as new.
How to care for your silver jewellery
It is best to dry polish frequently using your Kailis silver polishing soft cloth. When doing so, please ensure that the cloth does not come into contact with the pearl.
We recommend a light polish at home after each wear to prevent tarnish building up, and a standard clean by the Kailis Jewellery team for light tarnishing. Our Silver Polishing Kit is an excellent addition to your home cleaning routine, and contains a silver polishing spray, Kailis silver cloth, and mini soft bristle brush.
You can take your piece in to your closest boutique for its complimentary standard clean. If you are unable to visit a Kailis boutique, please contact our customer care team.
If your jewellery requires further attention, it will require assessment by our Jeweller. Our team will be in contact with their findings and recommendations, along with any further steps.
Please ensure you do not swim, shower, sleep or exercise whilst wearing the jewellery, as this can cause damage to it. A humid environment can also affect the metal, and lead to quicker tarnishing.
When not worn, please store the silver in your Kailis pouch or in its original box in a cool, dry environment. This will keep it protected in between wears.

Please note, silver jewellery featuring a brushed finish or oxidised silver should not come into contact with the silver polishing cloth, and should only be professionally cleaned.
