Frequently asked questions

Where do Kailis Australian South Sea pearls come from?

Born from the rare Australian Pinctada maxima oyster – our Australian South Sea pearls are grown in the pristine, nutrient-rich waters off the coast of northern Western Australia, in the Kimberley region. We provide a certificate of authenticity to guarantee the pearl within each piece of jewellery is untreated and of natural colour and origin.

How are Kailis pearls different from other pearls?

The Pinctada maxima oyster is the largest of all pearl-producing oysters in the world, thus our Australian South Sea pearls have the thickest nacre and a lustre, colour and size to rival any other. At Kailis we hand-select only premium quality pearls from this limited production to craft our magnificent jewellery.

How long does it take to produce a pearl?

It can take two to three years for the Pinctada Maxima to produce a single pearl. Finding the perfect pair can take years of commitment from our dedicated team.

Why do pearls have small markings on them?

Pearls are the only gem produced by a living organism. The minor blemishes and marks found on a pearl are the natural birth marks of that particular pearl. No two pearls are alike, making your piece of pearl jewellery totally unique.

Where are Kailis Golden South Sea pearls from?

The Pinctada Maxima oyster is native to the crystal-clear waters of Australia, the Philippines and Indonesia. Like the Australian South Sea pearls, golden pearls are grown in the Pinctada maxima oyster, however for a golden pearl to be produced the oyster must have a gold coloured lip.

Where are Kailis Tahitian pearls from?

Tahitian pearls are grown from the Pinctada margaritifera, a black lipped oyster which thrives in the waters of Tahiti and French Polynesia.

What are Keshi pearls?

Japanese for poppy seed, ‘Keshi’ pearls are small seedless pearls, perfectly unique in shape. Often confused for natural pearls, Keshi pearls are a result of the culturing process and are often not discovered until the very end of the pearling process. Australian South Sea Keshi pearls are admired for their superior quality, remarkable lustre and organic appearance.

What are Baroque pearls?

Baroque pearls are celebrated for their distinctive and usually asymmetrical form. Baroque Australian South Sea pearls can grow to be quite large in size, irregular in form and can develop beautiful ribbons of lustre and colourful hues across their surface.

Why does my pearl look different to the one pictured?

Every pearl is individual with no two exactly alike, therefore some pearls may appear different in shape or colour to those pictured on our website.

How are Australian South Sea pearls graded?

Australian South Sea pearls are graded according to their five natural virtues: lustre, size, shape, colour and surface quality. Our meticulously selected Australian South Sea pearls are available in brand 1 and 2 . Brand 1 pearls are the rarest and are naturally of higher value.

Can you make custom or bespoke designs?

No. We only produce designs unique to Kailis Jewellery.

Can I get my item engraved?

Yes, engraving is available on select Kailis pieces. This service can be verified and quoted by the Kailis team, as we determine suitability based on the individual piece. We provide up to 5 letters for a $50 charge, and a quote will be provided for additional letters. Our engravings are available in these fonts: Arial, Lucida Calligraphy and Georgia.
